A known issue about the feature image of blog articles

Recently, some users are reporting that there is an issue about blog articles.

We found that the featured image of the blog article would be gone when the focus keyword or meta description was updated for a blog article. After checking our code, we found that when the article was updated, the featured image would be cleared though we didn’t change it. We were not sure whether this issue was related to the Shopify API.

At the moment, we can’t find a fix for the issue. Users need to manually re-upload the featured image to the article.

We have submitted an inquiry to reach Shopify developer support here: https://ecommerce.shopify.com/c/shopify-apis-and-technology/t/article-featured-image-is-removed-when-i-update-article-title-and-body_html-with-api-544842

5 reasons why you should try GIMP to make simple marketing graphics

Starting from the beginning, I was reluctant to use Photoshop to make my graphics. I still remembered Adobe CS4 was about US$1,500 in 2010. It’s so expensive that costed me almost 1 month of salary. (Yes, you could hire me very cheap at that time)

Our little software business is just like your online store. For us, the most challenging part will be developing a feature that you’ll find it useful.

So we would like to invite you to fill in an online survey for us. It will take around 3 min with several questions. Users who help us to finish the survey will be able to try new functions or products for free.

Launching SocialPort (formerly Terminal) – a Web App to Set a Custom Facebook Link Preview in 1 minute

Last year, we launched the Terminal app to enhance sharing URLs on Facebook. This was because we found that many Shopify store owners are not good at editing code snippet in the theme. We are looking for an easier solution than our existing one and it can serve a broader audience.

Though we didn’t spend a lot of time in promotions, we found that some users loved our app. They have uploaded more than 180MB of share images into our server.

Unfortunately, Facebook seemed to ban the way we share on the platform. At the same time, Facebook has tightened the editing of link preview image since July 2017.  Therefore, we decided to completely revamp our tool for our users, a new version with a different way to work on Facebook.

We decided to develop SocialPort.io for social media managers, online store owners and publishers.

You can easily share URLs without messing with Open Graph tags or other meta tags.

Facebook has blocked editing of link preview image and what it means for you?

Due to the continuous attempts of Facebook to reduce fakes news, link baits or misleading contents, Facebook has announced a new News Feed algorithm update which will limit the reach of content shared by profiles which regularly post a heap of links in quick succession.

On July 18, 2017 the ability to edit link preview content (title, description and preview image) will no longer be available for most Pages and apps. Previously, you can change the preview image with your own image. Now the feature has been disabled forever.

I am sure all of you find the feature disappeared. The change has become a trouble for many social media agencies and publishers. As an online store owner, you can longer set up promotion images for your facebook posts.

What you can do to solve the problem

There are a few ways you can try.

  1. Domain Verification to claim your site
Facebook has rolled out a solution for media publishers (not yet for other companies). To implement domain verification, you need to choose between two different methods:

    1. add a DNS TXT entry to your DNS record to confirm that you own the domain, or
    2. upload an HTML file provided by Facebook to your web directory and confirm domain ownership in Business Manager. You can follow the detailed instructions on the captioned website.
  2. Edit your Open Graph tags before sharing
The existing way to edit link preview image with Open Graph tags doesn’t change at all. You can still edit the related og tags to get your desired share posts. But you also need to edit your website coding manually. Of course, you can use our Shopify App – SPO to simplify the process for you. We would be happy to help!

Happy New Year, SPO users! I wish all of you’ll have good lucks in 2018.

Thanks for staying with us for the year. We appreciate your opinion whether it’s negative and positive. When there are new support emails coming to my mailbox, I always feel happy because it means our users really care about SPO and we can do better to fix their problems.

Personally, I would like to thank for your support as the Customer Success Officer in 2017 (as you saw in our notification email).

In the coming year, we’re planning what features will help our store owners to get more values from SPO. If we can do a little bit better, our store owners can be beneficial to the little changes we made.

The Findings:

From our user research, we found that:

  1. Store owners care about social sharing of products or the store’s home page
  2. Store owners want to look good when visitors share their online store
  3. Store owners want visitors to generate referral traffics via social sharing.

If you find other issues more critical, please let us know by filling in the form at the bottom.

What’s next?

Currently, we are researching how we can help our store owners in SEO and Social Media Marketing. Most SPO users want more sales and more traffic.

But I would say that there is NO silver bullet.

There is no app that you can install and Boom!… more sales coming in.

What we aim is not making a silver bullet. Instead, we strive to make a painkiller to solve your hair-burning problem. Finally, it can help you to save time and increase efficiency. And you’ll be happy to pay for the solution at a reasonable cost.
